Weekly Photo Challenge: Solitary

This week’s theme—solitary—really resonates with me. Although I love being around people and I’m usually the last one to leave a good party, I find myself needing a lot of alone time. Time to think. Perhaps that’s because I’m half photographer and half writer, and what’s a writer to do without time to think and record those thoughts? So I spend half my life being solitary, knowing that whenever I’m ready, the photographer half can come out to play.

What do you think of when you see this image? Has the boat left him adrift in the vast ocean?

  1. Love this photo. At first thought…you wonder if he’s stranded…until you realize someone took the picture. 🙂

    • It does look awfully refreshing, doesn’t it. Several of our group jumped in, but I stayed on the boat as someone had to take the photos 🙂

  6. Fantastic photo! This would fit the “Near and Far” photo challenge theme perfectly, also.

  7. it does remind me of one of the shipwrecked films – just a tad eerie!

    • Hmmmm, come to think of it, you have a point. Just not one of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, I hope, with thoughts of monster octopi and wacky pirates.

  9. Maybe it’s a Rorschach test…before I started reading, the first thing that popped into my mind was a guy swimming in the sea of possibility deciding whether or not to commit himself (flag down) the ship of an opportunity.

    • What an interesting take on the photo. I love it. I think I’ll send it to my photo stock agency with the tags, conceptual, possibilities and opportunity. Thanks, Lara.

  10. I think if I were participating in the weekly challenges, for “solitary” I would have gone by the local prison and asked to take a picture of someone in solitary confinement. I’m thinking the prison guards, upon hearing my request, would say, “Um, no.”…………lol

ha! i’ve had it both ways.. once while fishing in lake gatun, panama, a friend and i dove in the water to cool off. we swam around for a while; i looked at barb and said, ‘we just did something stupid. our money and passports are in the boat. our guide could leave us, and it would take the rest of the day to swim back…’
thankfully the guide was honest and didn’t leave us, but it was a wake-up call!
i have also been blissfully way off the grid and then shocked when a boating party showed up and set up camp!

    • Thank goodness your guide was honest. I love to snorkel, but haven’t done it in ages b/c I’d have to leave my SLR camera on the boat or beach. Perhaps I need to get an underwater camera :). As for the money and I.D., I learned that you can put them in a ziplock bag and attach them securely to your bathing suit.
How rude of that boating party to interrupt your solace. lol.

Good suggestion! The experience was good for me, as I learned to always be on the offensive when it comes to being safe and smart when travelling! z

    • Travel is so much about learning, in more ways than one. It’s a shame we have to be on the “preventative,” as I call it, but better safe than sorry. Also, an ounce of prevention, etc. Many of those old sayings were spot on.
