Weekly Photo Challenge: Wrong

Attack of the Seagull

I was at least twenty feet away from a fluffy seagull chick, but this mother seagull obviously thought I was in the wrong place at the wrong time. If looks could kill. She dive-bombed me multiple times before finally realizing that I wasn’t posing a threat.

I would have liked to ask her why she chose this spot for a baby outing. The chick was on a small church lawn in the middle of a busy Norwegian town.

  1. Oh, the wrath of a mother! The chick isn’t exactly camouflaged for that location 😉

  2. Seagulls can be incredibly aggressive and fierce – there are some seaside resorts in Cornwall where they divebomb you if you are carrying any food and then snatch it out of your hands. I’ve always been a bit wary since seeing Alfred Hitchcocks “The Birds”. Great capture though!

    • Thanks, D. I must admit, though, that it was pretty much an accident. I was focusing on the chick when my peripheral vision saw a white thing flying at me. Since my camera functions as an eye, I tilted it up to see, and I think I pushed the shutter release more from surprise than anything. Happy accident. I’ve had “The Birds” experience while on the island of Midway. A flock of angry turns mobbed us as we crossed an old unused runway b/c they lay their eggs in the grasses popping up through the concrete.
I remember seagulls in California being pretty laid back. But now I know to keep my wits about me (and my camera protecting my face) when visiting seaside resorts in Cornwall 🙂

    • Thank you. Me, too. I couldn’t believe how bold mama was to come straight at me 4 or 5 times. I mean, I’m quite a bit bigger than she is. And I was stupidly rooted there, unable to move. But luckily for both of us, she swerved away at the last second.

  4. The baby’s adorable, but the mother looks really mad! Nice photos.

    • Thank you, Barbara. That was my first impression—that she looked like she wanted to peck me to death. Makes me wonder if seagulls can really show emotion on their faces or if that’s the normal look from an angle we wouldn’t normally see (how many times do seagulls come directly at us?). But that little, fluffy chick was too adorable to pass up, photographically speaking.
